Key responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:
- The Senior Scientist will be engaged in complex research activities within the Merck Animal Health division, in collaboration with Supervisor, other Scientists, and Research management. This position is responsible for assisting with project planning, study execution and reporting, product licensure, and daily work direction of lower level laboratory technicians.
- The Senior Scientist will conduct assigned research work, including laboratory work and animal studies, data analysis, protocol/report preparation. Lab activities are conducted according to company and departmental procedures. Laboratory work involves cell culture, culture of viruses, perform standard microbiological procedures (aseptic technique), virus support assays (plaque purification, hemagglutination inhibition, TCID50, microneutralization), molecular techniques and reverse genetics, develop and validate potency tests and other assays including ELISA, qPCR, HPLC and flow cytometry, test samples, and prepare vaccines.
- Assists in transfer of technology and discussion/communication at team meetings.
- Train Lab Technician on laboratory work and assist in monitoring their assigned work to maintain good quality and be in compliance with policies and procedures.
- Manages own project activities and develops timelines for portions of team s project and projects under their control to meet established goals and timelines.
- Can serve as Study Investigator or Study Director on projects in supportive of vaccine licensure. Writes routine study protocols. Have the ability to create study designs to achieve valid results. Assists in writing more complex laboratory and animal study protocols. Writes study reports for routine work with limited supervision and have the ability to draft complex reports.
- Performs literature searches, reads scientific journals and apply findings to improve current work.
Qualifications
Education:
BS in a related field with at least (7) years of relevant work experience
Preferred:MS or PhD in Virology or Microbiology
Required
Experience:
- Experience conducting research project activities with minimal supervision
- Experience planning project activities and meeting timelines
- Expertise in standard Virological/Bacteriological/Immunological/Molecular Techniques of Cell Culture, Virus and Bacterial Quantification, Fluorescence Microscopy, ELISA, PCR, SDS-PAGE and Western blot
- Experience training Lab personnel
- Experience with assay development and troubleshooting
- Experience with preparation of vaccines and working with swine or livestock animals for vaccine evaluation
- Strong computer skills including knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and data management software
Strong verbal and written communication skills

- Demonstrable track record of development/licensure of products for the Animal Health Industry
- Experience in vaccine development research or related field
